Zombie Nutrition: 6 Ghoulish Wellness Tips from the Undead
Posted by Taheerah B on Dec 7, 2010 in Nutrition | 4 comments
Zombies are on the low end of the horror totem pole. They are usually portrayed as decaying, mindless, savages whose only goal is to consume buffets of brains. Sure they’re not sexy and glam like the vamps, and they can’t shape shift like werewolves; but their concept of wellness is the most sophisticated among the supernatural.
We can gain valuable insight about nutrition and wellness from these animated corpses. Below are 6 helpful holistic health tips from the undead that you can easily incorporate into your life:
1) Eat Fresh
Fresh, unprocessed food is both nutritious and delicious. When zombies feast, their food is fresh-so fresh, it’s still breathing! Reap the rewards of their rotting wisdom; buy the freshest cuts of natural meat and organic / local produce available at your local grocer’s or farmers’ market. Only buy meats that are anti-biotic and hormone free (and grass-fed if you have access). Zombies don’t eat at places like McDonald’s because they know the long term health benefits of a quality meal.
2) Exercise your Protein
Healthy protein receives optimum exercise BEFORE you consume it. Zombies have to chase after their food; their food is in a constant state of panic, so their “meals” are always on the move. What are the benefits of exercised protein? Cows and chickens that are allowed to roam and are exercised regularly are leaner than confined chickens and cows. Make sure your eggs are cage-free and that your meats are as natural as you can afford (pastured eggs and meats are ideal). Pastured means grass fed; grass fed meat and eggs are richer in Omega 3’s fats, vitamins and minerals than their store bought counterparts.
3) Stay Focused and Committed
Let’s face it, no one will ever mistaken zombies for Rhodes Scholars; but their commitment to their agenda trumps high IQ scores any day. They pursue their “dinner” with a relentless, single-mindedness that is admirable. Likewise, when you sign up for a health coaching program, stay focused. Once you make a commitment to living a healthy lifestyle, stick with it – you’ll reap the benefits in the short and long term.
4) Whole Nutrition = the sum of the “parts”
Zombies know that total nutrition doesn’t just lie in the flesh, but in the organs too. Organ meats, such as liver, are jammed pack with B vitamins, iron, protein, vitamins A and D, etc. Our ancestors included organ meats in their diet; even without a nutrition background, they knew these parts were nutrient dense. Squeamish about eating organs? A tasty and less traumatic alternative is to make homemade bone broth from chicken, beef or fish (recipes for all three will be featured in my upcoming E-book), which is rich in marrow nutrients. Zombies are often misunderstood because of their intense love of brains. Instead of putting them down for having a “one track mind,” think of them as being passionate “flesh foodies” instead.
5) Show some Brotherly Love
Zombies are a peace loving species – among one another that is. Zombies don’t attack other zombies, allowing them to direct their energy towards savoring live human flesh. Mmmmm…brains (Homer Simpson voice). Learn by ghoulish example, regularly go out of your way to treat others with kindness whenever possible. A smile goes a long way, it’s always in season and best of all, it’s FREE!
6) Knowledge is “contagious”
Zombies bite their victims and infect them, creating more zombies. Although I don’t condone killing, I do admire their spunk. Use the above tips to help promote wellness in your life. When you live a life that is balanced and supports your overall well-being, people will want to know what you are doing. Don’t hesitate to “infect” them with your knowledge!

This is great. What a frighteningly fresh approach to eating well.
Just a thought: you could turn this post into a trailer and market it towards B movies in the horror genre. You would reach a whole new demographic which could really use the nutritional advice (I’m sure that many of the viewers of the movies sustain themselves on a diet of pizza pops, doritos, and Kraft dinner).
Thanks for the fun and informative post.
Thanks for the compliment and the trailer idea, I never thought about that. Glad that you enjoyed it, look for my upcoming e-book on the same topic.
If you’re ever interested in pursuing the trailer idea here’s a great little production company that’s done some great work with zombies (among other great work): http://www.synnstudios.ca/ Again, just a thought.
Is the e-book all about healthy food and zombies?
Hi,
Thanks for the trailer resource. Yes, the e-book will be about healthy food and zombies.
